Phoenix dactylifera, a world apart in the wetlands of Alicante’s south.
Phoenix dactylifera in the Bon Mati’s salt lakes. Marmaronetta Birding
The palm trees will go with us always in any of the trips that we can carry out in the south-Alicante’s wetlands as the landscape morphology and the plant sociology of this area, are unthinkable without this plant habitat as they are vital for this environment. Fortunately, there is a long palm tree line with more than seven kilometres which delimits the Elche countryside, the Hondo and Santa Pola salt lakes natural parks. This line is composed by areas with palm trees forming a typical layout that was made by the Arabs. In this palm tree forest, the needs of the species are rewarded with protection and nourishment as its vegetation gives them in some stretches the name of jungle.
Huerto del canal, North limit in the Hondo Natural Park. Marmaronetta Birding
The palm tree areas with the Phoenix dactylifera species that encircle the north side of the old Elche reservoir, are the habitat chosen by several species as the carracas or the autillos, in order to breed their offspring. Seasonally, in winter, the palm grove is occupied even by the agateadores. We consider with a high precision, that its seasonal capacity to shelter different species is its great biological value.

The visit to the birds in this palm grove usually becomes a countryside trip highly gratifying because of two aspects, the sheltered species and the foster landscape. Its route needs to be done by the naturist people who visit it and want to have a total understanding of the natural systems of the south-alicante.

The general ecotone of the encircled spaces close to the lake systems and next to the palm grove presence which acts as a front between habitats, gives it a relatively important grade, depending on the seasons but always ready to show us its great beauty and its fauna possibilities.
